Happy Thanksgiving

Just wanted to wish all my loyal readers a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! I know for some it’s been a hard year, but when I look back I have so much to be thankful for!

Safe travels to any of you who might be traveling and enjoy the time you have with friends and family!

I’m looking forward to spending some time with my parents and sister! I’m also praying that the 6+ hour trip down there with 2 small kids goes well!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Deep Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot the last week or so about the seasons of life. This is a pretty deep subject for someone like me to think about. I’m not a deep thinker usually, and honestly I’ve always approached most (OK, everything!) things in life with a “let’s just do it” attitude and very rarely thought things through. That’s caused a great many problems for me in my life. My parents tried to tell me time and time again that if I thought about things first, there might be less hurt in the end. Who knew – they were right!?!? I’m almost 34 and I think I’m finally learning that lesson!

What I’m really learning is that life changes – seasons of life change – so that means my surroundings – so to speak – change too. What I mean by that is – back in 1991 we moved to NC from PA, that was a huge deal because I was 15 years old and had never lived anywhere but in Boyertown, PA with my friends and many, many family members. It was a big change, but I adapted and made new friends in a new school and at a new church. I sure missed the friends and family I had, but God was there for me.

Thankfully that move ended up bringing me my wonderful husband – but that wasn’t until later!

Then after high school and then college (where I made new friends again!), I went from teaching full time and being around people all the time to being a stay at home mom – and being all alone. I had no idea what I was doing and I didn’t know who this little baby was or what he needed from me! All my friends were still working and didn’t have time to come hang out with me during the day so I made new friends. At one point we changed churches – made new friends. We moved to a new house – made new friends. And so on…

And now here I am at what I feel like is another change in life. I am done having babies (thankfully!) and same as some of my friends now – we’re looking into schools for the start of kindergarten (Luke won’t start until 2010, but you gotta look early!) and making those types of decisions for my kids. It’s a huge responsibility – but that’s another blog post! Some of my friends are also looking at schools for their kids… and as I look at the future I think things might change again. I really do hate change! Likely our kids will end up at different schools, making new friends and we won’t see each other as often as we have in the past, and that makes me sad, BUT since I’m thinking about it ahead of time (for once) I can make a plan and know that I will have to work extra hard to keep those friendships in tact. And I also believe that there will be other friendships formed.

I guess to try and sum this up – I’m thinking that God knows just who and what we need when we need them! He brings people into my life for me, but I think sometimes also for the other persons benefit too. On this Thanksgiving Eve Day – I’m so thankful for my Lord and Savior and that He loves me enough to send me the just the right wonderful, loving, loyal friends and family I need at the times when I need them most! I’m very blessed!

And thanks to David for helping me think through all this! He’s defiantly the thinker in the family!

Benefit Concert

We don’t usually have church on a Sunday night. Our church meets on Sunday mornings and then we meet with our home group on Sunday nights, but last night was special!

One of the guys from our church organized a benefit concert in conjunction with and organization in Greensboro called Street Watch. Basically the concert was for us to bring items for the homeless folks in Greensboro. Our tickets for the show were items to be donated!

I was pretty excited for the concert because my mother in law was coming to keep the kids, so I could go and enjoy the show and not worry about them. David ran sound for the shows so he left about 3PM and I left about 6:15 to head to church. Well, when I got there, I knew I was in for a “treat” because I could hear the band playing OUTSIDE while I parked my car!

From here it gets kinda funny, cause I’m obviously getting old! The first band that played is a local band called Layden. They were pretty good, except I couldn’t understand anything they said … and it was so loud I thought my ears might bleed! They were jammin’ to say the least! Then the funniest thing happened… after I think 3 songs, the lead singer say “Now, this next song really rocks…” I looked at David and said “If the next song rocks, what were the first 3?” I’m so old!!! They were really good, and it was fun, but I did feel old! You can click on their name above to check out the MySpace page.

Then we heard from the ladies that were heading up Street Watch about the realities of homelessness and how sad it is and dangerous this time of year. They were very touching and obviously they love the Lord and He is using them to help those who are out on the street!

The second band that played was a bit more my speed! The Luminous Sky – check them out by clicking on their name! They were totally awesome and I could tell they really love the Lord. Their ministry is really cool! I had a great time listening to them!

It was a neat and different experience for me and our church and I was so glad to be a part of something that can help others! If you’re in this area and would like more information on how to be involved with Street Watch, let me know and I’ll make sure you get hooked up!

Christmas Decorations

I know it’s a bit early to be putting up Christmas decorations, but because I had Avery just before Thanksgiving last year and didn’t do any decorating at all, and because we’ll be going to my parents for Thanksgiving this year, I wanted to get the decorations up and going before we left.

Since I was in the mood, and my in law’s had the little ones it made it pretty easy to get it done. This is really the first year decorating this house, so there are a few more things I’d like to do – well a lot more really but won’t because of Avery’s age – hopefully I’ll get those done before we head to Georgia on Wednesday night!

Our first snow

To some of you that may not seem all that odd, but for those of us who live in the South – it was a huge shock to wake up yesterday morning and find a dusting of snow! It was a wonderful surprise as we never get snow here before Thanksgiving and usually not even until January! So it was reason to celebrate for sure! Luke was very excited about it and anxious to go outside and shovel it! Unfortunately for him there wasn’t enough to shovel, but we did get some pretty pictures of it!

We did call Nanny at Luke’s request to tell her about the snow! Now he keeps asking when it will be Christmas!? Sure put me in the Holiday mood too!!

Also, in true southern style (which you would think I would be used to by now!) all the schools in the area were on a one or two hour delay! And lots of places were closed! It’s so silly, but that’s how it is here, and sometimes that makes for nice family mornings of lazy breakfasts, hot chocolate and just hanging out!

We did go out about 10AM and everything was dry, the snow didn’t last much past noon, but it was fun to wake up to it all the same!

Sittin' with Santa

We had the awesome privilege of being invited to join my in laws at their care group last night. It was a special occasion for sure and all were invited because they had a special visitor! That’s right, Santa Clause! It was the first time Luke has seen Santa up close and the first time he sat on Santa’s lap. He did very well! Does anyone want to guess what he told Santa he wanted for Christmas? That’s right again – Thomas the Train stuff!

This was also Avery’s first experience with Santa – she didn’t do as well as her brother – as you’ll see from the pictures below. She did however LOVE Sandy Goude’s bear! So the evening wasn’t a total loss!

It was neat to see Luke with Santa. What a fun time of year!

When Left on his own

This is what you get when you forget that you have left your camera – with the card and the battery in it – on your desk. Then Luke comes into the office in the wee hours of the morning (OK, like 6:30AM, but I’m still in bed anyway!) to play on the computer and he decides to take pictures. I didn’t know about these pictures until I went to download the pictures from Avery’s party! I deleted a BUNCH of them, but these where the funniest ones!

Pictures from the party

Sorry it's taken me so long to get these posted! I've been sick - strep throat - and honestly it kicked my butt! So I'm finally feeling better and can get these posts updated!

Avery's party was held at Chick-Fil-A in High Point at the Palladium center. It was a great time, and the bigger kids keep themselves busy playing in the play area! It was a good time!

Do I have to wear this thing - it's too small!! OHHH - blow out the candle!
Yummy cake - give it a squeeze!
Yeah, that was good!
Mom and Dad changing the dirty cloths after the cake eating!

Avery's Birthday

Hard to believe that today is my baby's first birthday! For some reason I've been a bit emotional about the whole thing! David said maybe it's because she’s are last – I don’t know why, he may be right!

It seems hard to believe that at this exact time last year, I was in the hospital all hooked up to my pre-op IV’s and waiting for our baby! My mom drove to the hospital with us, Luke stayed over night with Mimi and Papa, and then Mimi met us at the hospital the next morning! Along with Robert and Amy, and 2 of my wonderful friends – Leslie and Crystal came before I went back as well. Crystal came BEFORE she went to work (that meant a whole lot to me) and she lead us in prayer before they took me back! It was really a wonderful morning of anticipation and love for the second Winslow baby!

Little did we know we were gonna have a girl! That was a wonderful and exciting surprise for sure!

And today we celebrate her first year! I had no idea the difference a second baby would make in our house! The first baby is a HUGE lifestyle change – a difference in the dynamic of a marriage, the fact that I quite work and was a full time stay at home mom who knew NOTHING, and here was this little person I knew nothing about (and to think they sent Luke home with us anyway?!?!)! But with Avery I knew somewhat what to expect – sleepless nights, crying for no apparent reason, bottles every 3 hours 24 hours a day, dirty diapers, unexplained changes in sleep habits, all of those things I knew were coming! What I didn’t know what to expect was the actual addition of another person in the house! Avery’s presence in this house has been just as wonderful a blessing as Luke’s was!

It’s been so fun to see her grow and develop and chance and learn! She’s so smart and anything Luke can do, she thinks she can do too – or she gets hurt trying! You show her how to do something one time, and she does it. She can blow a whistle – just from watching Luke do it! She blows on her food (even if it’s not hot!), she can climb up in the kiddie chair we have, she winks, and she’s started blowing kisses. She’s also started talking some more. This week she’s started to tell Jane to sit – now mind you she’s not saying Jane – she’s saying sit (which sounds more like bi).

I’m so blessed to have 2 wonderful children, even if they do totally wear me out each and every day! And I’m so thankful to be celebrating my baby girls first birthday!

God is so cool!

Today I woke up feeling totally yucky! You know that all over achy feeling, sore throat, headache and yucky in general?!? Well that’s how I felt. I guessed I managed to get the same cold that Luke had – lucky me.

I was disappointed to be feeling bad as it was my plan to take the kids to the dollar store and get the contents for some shoe boxes for our churches part in Operation Christmas Child. I totally did NOT feel up to it, and I was pretty bummed about it! But luckily for me I have until Sunday to get them ready!

After much debate (I really don’t like going to the doc.) I decided to go to the Minute Clinic at CVS – it was the first time I’ve been there and it was a WONDERFUL thing! I loved it – fast, the girl was really nice and the kids did great! Anyway, the nurse practitioner agreed that it looked like just a cold.

In the course of our conversation we found that she has 2 children very close to the same ages and genders as mine. I also came to find out that her and her husband started on the “Dave Ramsey Plan” back in April. For those of you who know us you know that we found Dave Ramsey several years ago and have since completed and or lead Financial Peace University 3 or 4 times. You can click here to find out more about Dave Ramsey. It was really neat to talk to her about it. She shared that it’s taken a good bit of time to get used to using the cash system and sticking to a written cash budget! This is what we found ourselves and have heard from most everyone who has gone thru the class. I agreed and told her to hang in there, it gets better! I also shared with her that for us it has made a huge difference in how we deal with and handle our money and our finical decisions!

She was super nice and I cannot help but wonder if I felt crappy today just so she and I could meet. Maybe not, but either way we did, and I’ll be praying for her and her family! I think it’s neat how the Lord gives us opportunities to show Him thru us! I hope I did just that today!

Monday

For some reason today I woke up with about a million different emotions going on! I didn’t get much sleep last night – Avery is maybe getting another tooth, or a cold, I don’t know and she didn’t sleep too well, and I’m a person who needs sleep or I don’t do well. But other than that – today is a beautiful, sunny, crisp fall day and I have no reason to feel down!

But down is not the only feeling - I feel almost complacent. I hate feeling that way. I have 4 hours to get stuff done this morning (Luke has Lunch Bunch at school and gets to stay until 1PM today) and I honestly don’t feel like doing any of it! I’m hoping that once I drop him off, I’ll be ready to go!

All the feelings aren’t bad because there is a feeling of blessedness, I don’t even know if that’s a word or not – but I do feel blessed. I have a great husband, fun kids (even if they don’t sleep well!), a beautiful house and many great friends and family!

So this morning as I call out to the Lord to ask Him give me what I need to be a productive wife, and a good mother I recall an email I got several weeks ago from a friend. She forwarded it – I believe it was a daily devotional email she got – anyway this quote was there and I really liked it and hope maybe it will help encourage you (and me again) as we start a new week!

“You are the exact Mom (and I would like to add – Wife) God knew your children (and husband) needed. Live in that truth today!”

Beautiful

I have to say that the weather here today is WONDERFUL! I so love living in the South! We like to say “if you don’t like the weather, stick around it’ll change in a day or so!” And that is so true! Yesterday and today the temperature has been very mild – mid 70’s and sunny! The trees are also so beautiful this week! Usually we have a very dry summer and therefore we end up missing “peak tree” season since it usually happens like the second week in October, but this year we had a good bit more rain and peak season has been much later this year… like this week!!! It’s just been so pretty!

Fall isn’t unusually my favorite season – except the promise of Thanksgiving and Christmas – but the past week or two have been really nice here! I am also one of those people who just does better with more sunshine and less cloudy days – so the sun and the beautiful colors have been really enjoyable!

On the flip side, it’s hard to get into the spirit of the season when it’s 75 and I’m wearing tank tops and shorts! I am really looking forward to decorating my house this year! I didn’t do much last year cause I had a new baby and just really didn’t feel like I could do a whole lot! I did put up a tree and all that! But after Thanksgiving last year I got some GREAT deals on decorations and cannot wait to put those up there year. My big concern this year is a little thing we like to call Hurricane Avery! She blows in – does as much damage as she can in a short amount of time - then blows out!! I’m thinking all tree decorations will be at least 3 feet up on the tree! Luckily for me I have a very tall ceiling in my living room and can get a very tall tree if I need too! I’ll be sure to take pictures when I do decorate!

It’s hard to believe that Avery’s first birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner! Time flies when you have 2 little ones to keep up with!

Elbow Pads

The other night while Luke and David were playing boat (which is something Luke started a while back) Avery comes over to me with a set of Luke’s elbow pads. They came with his bicycle helmet that we got him for Christmas last year. I guess he got them out while getting out his imaginary tools and Avery found them. So I put one on her arm, which she immediately took off and handed back to me and stuck her arm out again. Things went on like this for a while… I probably put that thing on her arm 10 times before she decided to leave it on, at which point she came with the second one wanting it on her other arm. I happily obliged her! Here are some pictures of her playing with them on. She wore them for probably 15 minutes before she took them off! She’s too funny!

Election Day

I am so glad to say that today is Election Day! I’m so sick to death of all the political ads and the “he said she said” crap that is all over the TV, radio, and in my very own neighborhood!! I’m not big on political stuff to begin with and the last week or so has been almost unbearable, but after today – it’ll be mostly over! But as much as I hate politics, I have really started trying to pray more for our country and our leaders – who ever they may be! I would encourage you to do the same. Talking badly about our countries leaders doesn’t change anything, only prayer will do that!

So I was one of the many (more than I would have guessed) that got up and was at the voting polls when they opened this morning at 6:30AM! My in laws keep the kids overnight last night – which made for a wonderful date night- so I was able to get up, go vote, and even go to the grocery store this morning! I also got a full night sleep – the first one in a long time – and am overall feeling pretty good about myself as a US citizen this morning!

If you haven’t voted yet try to get out and do that today. It’s a right that is very precious to us as citizens and if you’re NOT into politics and you are sick of all the ridicules stuff going on “out there” – like people saying that Obama is the anti-christ (I don’t like him either, but come on now, I don’t think the Bible is talking about Mr. Obama when it talks about the anti-christ!!!!) it’s still our right and our duty to vote and we should each exercise that right! Plus it will make you feel good for having done so!

Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too!

For Halloween this year we took the kids to the Costume Carnival put on by First Wesleyan Church in High Point. They did a really great job and Luke had a ton of fun! It was also nice for us because there were games for him to play and not just candy to be gotten! We had a really good time!

Before going to the Carnival, we stopped by to see David’s grandmothers who are in the nursing home right next to the church so they could see the kids dressed up! I have to say, I thought they were SO CUTE! Hope you enjoy the pictures!
